Google Cloud offered $1 million in coverage for survivors of hidden mining

  • “Insurance” available to customers on Premium subscription
  • The company stressed the urgency of the threat
  • 65% of all hacks of cloud accounts are done for hidden mining

The Google Cloud service announced today, June 9, the launch of a new initiative. Customers with a Google Security Command Center Premium subscription will be able to claim up to $1 million in compensation if they suffer losses from hidden mining.

This is how the company explained its decision:

“Hidden mining is a common and quite costly threat to cloud environments.. A single attack could result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in unauthorized computing costs in just a few days.”

The service in the press release refers to a September 2022 report from Google’s cybersecurity division. It claims that in 65% of hacks of cloud service accounts it was done to launch hidden mining software.

Such attacks are automated, so they are quite cheap and effective. But now, if the hacker manages to bypass Google’s protection and start mining, the corporation will cover possible customer losses.

“We can offer financial compensation because Security Command Center Premium includes special detection capabilities built into the Google Cloud infrastructure. To prevent attacks, the Security Control Center continuously scans virtual machine memory for the presence of malware,” the company said.

We told us earlier that the service has entered into a partnership with Polygon.
