HSBC has launched its Gold Token on its platforms for retail investors in Hong Kong. This tokenized gold product is available through HSBC Online Banking and the HSBC HK Mobile App. HSBC claims to be the first bank to create a blockchain-based real-world asset targeted at retail investors. The HSBC Gold Token is minted on HSBC’s Orion digital assets platform. Tokenization of real-world assets, including gold, is becoming more common in the banking and financial industry. HSBC had previously announced its plans to offer a tokenized gold product as part of its digital asset custody platform. The HSBC Gold Token is authorized by the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong. The launch of this retail product marks a significant milestone for HSBC in the adoption of distributed ledger technology.
