Instagram Adds Generative AI That Swaps Image Backgrounds

Instagram, the popular photo-sharing app owned by Meta, has introduced an innovative AI-powered feature called Backdrop. Currently available only to users in the United States, Backdrop takes advantage of Meta’s own Emu Edit technology to allow users to edit the background of their images. Unlike simple color filters and basic edits, Backdrop enables users to completely reimagine their image’s background with just a few taps and a prompt. For example, users can choose prompts like ‘chased by dinosaurs’ or ‘surrounded by puppies’ to create a whole new image for their story.

Ahmad Al-Dahle, the generative AI lead at Meta, shared details about Backdrop on Threads, Meta’s version of Twitter. He explained that users can access the backdrop feature by tapping a button at the top of a new Story and a ‘Try it’ sticker will be available for friends to use when they share the created image. The aim of this feature is to boost confidence and creativity for the person posting the photo while inspiring others to try it out as well, resulting in more engagement on the platform.

The integration of AI into social media platforms is becoming increasingly common, with Snapchat recently introducing similar AI-powered functionalities. Meta’s emphasis on AI as a core part of its business strategy is evident through its expansion of generative AI features in various platforms like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger, as well as the launch of the standalone AI image generator called “Imagine with Meta.”

In addition to the introduction of Backdrop, Meta also expanded its Threads app to more European countries. This move showcases Meta’s global strategy and its vision for an AI-enhanced, globally connected future. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, believes in the potential of AI and has invested in open source projects and developments within the AI community.

With these advancements, Meta aims to create a more exciting and engaging platform for users, focusing on AI-driven features rather than solely pursuing a metaverse comprising of half-legged cartoon avatars.
