Irkutsk miners owe over 480 million rubles to power engineers

Irkutskenergosbyt is staunchly battling against underground mining, taking legal action against offenders. Since the beginning of this year, the company has already filed 794 lawsuits targeting underground miners.

Over the span of just five years, the energy company has initiated a staggering 1,882 court claims, with 1,074 being deemed legitimate and resulting in court-ordered compensation of over 480 million rubles paid to the power engineers.

Those engaged in underground mining are known to utilize balconies, basements of apartment buildings, as well as utility rooms on private properties. In a quest to avoid detection, some miners have gone to extreme measures, hiding their equipment in unsuspecting locations such as doghouses and animal pens.

Representatives from Irkutskenergosbyt have repeatedly emphasized the significant risks associated with mining in domestic spaces and unprepared locations. Cases of mining farms catching fire have been alarmingly common. Moreover, the excessive electricity consumption by such equipment can overload electrical networks, leading to failures and power outages.

In a bid to incentivize miners to relocate to energy-efficient regions, the Ministry of Energy is contemplating a substantial increase in electricity tariffs specifically for this group.
