Japan AI, blockchain experts set up committee to solve copyright issues

Japanese AI and blockchain experts have formed a committee to address copyright issues related to the use of AI models in creative processes. Known as the “Anime Chain Preparatory Committee,” the think tank aims to develop an AI model with opt-in training data for anime creators, ensuring transparency and legitimacy through blockchain technology. The committee’s primary objective is to establish a safe environment for creators by obtaining the express consent of copyright holders. Additionally, the committee intends to tackle the labor shortage problem in Japan’s anime industry by introducing AI systems. The new platform will also ensure that earnings generated from AI are shared with both creators and original IP rights holders, with all keyframes and images being recorded on a publicly distributed ledger. The committee has outlined a three-step plan, including establishing a cooperative framework, creating a foundational model with copyright holder consent, and utilizing blockchain for decentralized governance. This initiative comes in response to the increasing threat of copyright issues in the development of generative AI, a concern that has been raised by experts in Japan and internationally.
