Kamala Harris Seeks Support from AI and Cryptocurrency Industries at Fundraising Event in New York
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris made a bold move to court the AI and cryptocurrency industries during a recent high-profile fundraising event in New York City. This marks the first time that the Democratic nominee has publicly addressed these industries on the campaign trail.
Harris spoke to donors about her economic agenda, placing significant emphasis on innovation and job creation through emerging technologies. She expressed her commitment to partnering with labor, small business founders, innovators, and major companies in order to invest in America’s competitiveness and future. Harris also expressed a desire to promote innovative technologies such as AI and digital assets, while ensuring the protection of consumers and investors.
The crypto industry has become a prominent player in the 2024 race, with investors and executives making substantial political contributions in the hope of shaping the regulatory landscape.
Interestingly, Harris’ Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, has also sought to attract support from the crypto industry, albeit in a more aggressive manner. Trump has openly criticized current regulations and vowed to dismiss the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Gary Gensler, while outlining plans for stablecoins and a broader leadership in the crypto space. Harris, on the other hand, presented a broader economic proposal that includes investments in sectors like semiconductors and clean energy as part of her “opportunity economy” platform. She pledged to streamline regulations and reduce bureaucracy to create a more business-friendly environment.
Oliver Linch, CEO of Bittrex Global and head of the future markets unit for the UK-based policy think tank, the Adam Smith Institute, commented on Harris’ stance on crypto. He mentioned that it is still unclear how Harris would approach the industry, but speculated that she would likely continue the policies of the current administration. Linch noted that while there are Democrats emerging as pro-crypto, the matter is not as simple as a Democrat versus Republican narrative.
The fundraising event drew the participation of high-profile Democratic officials such as New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, as well as celebrities Anne Hathaway and Billy Porter. Tickets for the event ranged from $500 to $1 million, further boosting Harris’ already substantial fundraising efforts.
With her campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and state parties raising $361 million in August, Harris continues to hold a significant financial advantage over Trump, who raised $130 million during the same period.
