Latam Insights Encore: Brazil Takes the Lead in BRICS De-Dollarization Drive Under Lula’s Leadership

Brazil is set to be at the forefront of new de-dollarization initiatives within the BRICS organization. The country has consistently advocated for reducing the reliance on the U.S. dollar as a global currency, particularly due to the challenges it poses for independent nations. Brazil is now actively promoting these policies at the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan.

Eduardo Paes Saboia, Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Secretary for Asia and the Pacific, recently confirmed that the country is moving ahead with these measures as part of the efforts to normalize trade transactions for BRICS nations affected by sanctions. These measures have already been discussed in meetings of finance ministers and central bank heads. Brazil will lead this push for de-dollarization.

During the BRICS Business Forum in Moscow, a payment system called BRICS Pay was unveiled. Brazil, as the future chair of the organization, will be responsible for developing and encouraging the use of BRICS Pay. President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva has been a vocal supporter of de-dollarization and has openly called for the abandonment of the U.S. dollar as a global reserve currency.

In 2023, Lula suggested the creation of a BRICS currency to facilitate international trade, questioning why the currencies of BRICS nations are considered weak or valueless in other countries. Brazil’s actions are set to elevate the BRICS organization to a new level of independence, solidifying its position as a powerful player in global trade. The implementation of BRICS Pay and its future growth could gradually reshape trading patterns within the bloc, leveraging its financial influence.
