Legislators Urge Leading Bitcoin ATM Companies to Tackle Crypto Fraud Risks
Seven Senate Democrats have reached out to the top 10 bitcoin ATM firms in the United States, urging them to combat the growing issue of cryptocurrency fraud that particularly affects elderly Americans. These lawmakers explained that scammers exploit the anonymity of crypto transactions that occur through bitcoin ATMs to steal from seniors. As a result, they are pressuring these companies to implement stronger measures to tackle the rise in crypto fraud. The senators expressed concern about the association of cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin, with criminal activities and highlighted the attraction of fraudsters to the relative anonymity and irreversibility of crypto transactions. They mentioned the surge in reported losses from BTM scams from $12 million to $114 million between 2020 and 2023, as per data provided by the FBI and FTC. The senators have requested a response from the bitcoin ATM companies by October 4, including details about the measures already in place to prevent fraud.
