MakerDAO founder proposes strict deflationary tokenomics amid rebranding process

MakerDAO founder, Rune Christensen, has put forward a proposal for strict deflationary tokenomics as the community votes on a potential rebranding of the protocol. If approved, the proposed tokenomics would eliminate token emissions and make the token structure strictly deflationary. This would involve a burning mechanism that permanently reduces the token supply over time. However, exceptions could be made in cases of significant financial shortfall to protect Maker’s stablecoins. The proposal also introduces “Star Token Rewards” to incentivize engagement and governance participation. The vote will not only decide on the rebranding but also determine whether the ecosystem retains the Maker brand or fully adopts the Sky identity. In the case of the latter, MKR tokens would be rebranded as Wrapped 24k Sky Tokens (SKY24K). If the Maker brand prevails, Sky would play an auxiliary role and be renamed OLD_SKY, convertible back to MKR at a fixed rate or exchanged for tokens governing the Sky Star. Christensen envisions Spark and Sky as complementary “Stars” within Maker’s ecosystem, focusing on supply and demand sides respectively. The final vote will take place from November 11 to November 14, with MakerDAO aiming to strengthen its foundational structures and foster sustainable growth.
