Man arrested for using ChatGPT to generate fake news for profit in China

  • He made up the news and commercialized it on Baijiahao
  • The criminal used ChatGPT to generate content
  • He faces up to 5 years in prison

Police in Gansu province, China, have arrested a man for spreading fakes about a train crash for profit. The suspect used ChatGPT to generate and post content on the Baijiahao platform.

The suspect is allegedly named Hong Mudi. He was allegedly an employee of a small media company in Shenzhen. A man used ChatGPT to generate news about a train wreck.

It said a train had derailed and crashed into a construction site, killing 9 people. Hong posted from several accounts. In total, this fake received more than 15,000 “clicks.”

This is how the perpetrator wanted to commercialize the content. In his actions, he violated several provisions of the quarrels and provocation ordinance.

This law was passed in January of this year. It is aimed primarily at combating cybercrime, harassment and fakes in social networks. The maximum penalty for violating this provision is 5 years in prison.

“He was just making up news, pumping traffic and making a profit,” a comment from a platform user quotes SCMP magazine.

This is the first arrest in China, and possibly the world, in a case related to ChatGPT.

Even though the technology is relatively new, there have been plenty of cases of fakes being spread through chatbots.

For example, we previously reported that unknown “detractors” in Congress used ChatGPT to “smear” Binance and Changpen Zhao in person.

In the past, we have described how some “bad guys” in Congress used ChatGPT to “blacken” Binance and Changpen Zhao.
