Media: In Kenya, police raided Worldcoin offices

  • Security officials seized documentation and electronics from the company’s offices in Nairobi, local media reported.
  • Before that, the country suspended the firm’s operations, citing privacy laws.Worldcoin’s activities have also allegedly attracted the interest of regulators in France, Britain and Germany.

Police, backed by a multi-agency team, searched the offices of Tools For Humanity, the parent company of Worldcoin, in Nairobi, Kenya. This was reported by Kahawatungu quoting its sources.

The operation took place on Mombasa Road. According to unconfirmed information, law enforcers seized documentation as well as digital media.

The reason for the search is still unknown. In a comment to the media, a spokesperson for the Office of the Kenya Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) said it was not aware of the searches.

The vice chairperson of the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) Immaqale Kassite said the operation was prompted by Worldcoin activity. It said the company violated data security laws.

The Kenya Capital Markets Authority (CMA) also emphasized that the project is not regulated in the country. Locals have been warned about the potential risks of using the company’s biometric scanners.

Worldcoin has not yet commented on the situation.

Remember, in early August 2023, Kenya suspended the organization’s operations in Kenya. In some cases, law enforcers had to use force to disperse those seeking the authorization bonus.

The project has drawn mixed reactions since its launch. The company has come under scrutiny from regulators in the UK, France and Germany.

While Worldcoin continues to insist that the technology is fully transparent. All collected data is deleted as soon as the identifier is created, the company emphasized.
