Myanmar’s shadow government has created a digital bank on the Polygon blockchain

The announcement by Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) to set up a digital bank comes after the US announced plans to impose financial sanctions on the country’s two state-owned banks.

NUG, the shadow government established after the 2021 coup d’état, established Spring Development Bank. It effectively became Myanmar’s first cryptocurrency banking institution.

The Spring Development administration says that the main objective of the crypto bank, based on the Polygon blockchain, will be to accelerate domestic and international payments, as well as provide international access to a wide range of financial products.

The bank aims to serve Myanmar’s 55 million people, as well as the two million emigrant diaspora who live and work outside the country, while continuing to financially support families back home.

A spokesman for Spring Development Bank, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, told reporters that the launch of the new institution was the first step toward bringing financial freedom back to Myanmar. The use of cryptocurrency assets, according to the expatriate, is an obvious solution to provide financial support to Burma’s citizens and its government-in-exile.

About two years ago, the NUG, which is made up of supporters of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s (Aung San Suu Kyi’s) announced that it had recognized the Tether (USDT) stablecoin as its official currency.
