New Zealand crypto exchange Dasset has begun the process of self-liquidation

Clients of New Zealand crypto exchange Dasset have lost access to their funds. According to local media, the Oakland-based marketplace has begun the liquidation process.

One Dasset user said he had been trying to withdraw all of his $40,000 in savings from the platform for three months, but was unsuccessful. Another customer said he was able to contact Dasset CEO Stephen Macaskill directly about the withdrawal, but the user is still unable to access his account.

Speaking to reporters, Macaskill said that Dasset was unable to find a replacement banking provider after it stopped servicing the cryptocurrency platform in January 2023. Therefore, the company has begun a voluntary liquidation. That being said, Dasset has not officially announced it as of yet. Notably, despite the discontinuation of withdrawals, new users were previously able to register on the platform.

Now when trying to access the exchange’s website, the visitor is taken to the website of law firm Grant Thornton, which has been appointed as the company’s liquidator. Grant Thornton specialists intend to contact all Dasset clients in the near future, promising to keep them informed of developments in the situation. Grant Thornton is also the liquidator of the Cryptopia exchange, which collapsed in 2019 due to a hack that caused customers multi-million dollar losses.

Dasset started operating in 2017, during the “ICO heyday”. However, compared to its competitors Binance and Bybit, Dasset’s trading volumes have been relatively small.

Recently, Ian Woolford, a top official at the Central Bank of New Zealand, urged lawmakers to scrutinize the regulation of cryptocurrencies as he believes caution should be applied to this asset class.
