Nvidia new gaming chip for China complies with US export controls

Nvidia, the U.S.-based chipmaker, is launching a new gaming chip specifically designed for Chinese consumers that complies with strict U.S. export controls. The GeForce RTX 4090 D chip, priced at 12,999 yuan ($1,842), will be available in mainland China in January. While it is slightly slower than Nvidia’s previous RTX 4090 chip, it meets the export requirements set by the U.S. government. Nvidia has been working closely with U.S. authorities to develop this product and ensure compliance. The move comes after the U.S. Department of Commerce banned the sale of advanced AI chips to China on national security grounds. Despite the ban, Nvidia’s strong performance is largely driven by the global AI market, with the decline in mining activity having little impact on the company. In order to continue operating in the Chinese market, Nvidia plans to roll out two more tailor-made chips in the near future. China, on the other hand, is making efforts to replace Nvidia’s chips by imposing export restrictions on raw materials for chip manufacturing and investing in its own semiconductor factory and advanced technologies. Despite the challenges in AI chips, China’s generative AI market is flourishing with various tech companies launching their products under strict regulatory scrutiny.
