Optimism network changed its name to OP Mainnet

  • The rebranding is meant to reflect the project’s new goal of creating a “super network.”
  • It is an ecosystem that will unite multiple blockchains
  • The name change is part of a comprehensive competitive strategy Optimism
  • The network is losing out on key metrics to Arbitrum

The Optimism project administration announced the rebranding last Friday, June 23. The blockchain is now called OP Mainnet, but the changes don’t end there.

“This move is intended to make a clear separation between the network itself and the team, spirit and atmosphere that includes Optimism,” the official statement said.

The press release about the rebranding said more. The purpose of this move is to reflect the team’s vision of “superblockchain” as a subspace with multiple L2 shells.

OP Mainnet will act as the basis of the new ecosystem.. But, characteristically, nothing is said about the practical changes within the project. We can assume that the rebranding is just the first step of a comprehensive strategy to win the market.

Optimism and Arbitrum are the two most popular shells for Ethereum. The first is faster, the second is cheaper. And that’s what makes Arbitrum the winner in terms of gross locked-in value (TVL), $4.36 billion vs. $1.38 billion:

We previously reported that the Optimism network has successfully rolled out a Bedrock update. Read more at the link.
