Polygon zkEVM suffers prolonged outage amid sequencing issues

Polygon zkEVM experiences extended downtime due to sequencing problems, resulting in a lack of block production for almost 24 hours. The team attributes the issue to L1 reorganization, which disrupted the zkEVM Mainnet Beta. Polygon is actively working on resolving the problem and plans to provide a detailed post-mortem analysis. It should be noted that this outage only affects Polygon zkEVM and not other components like Polygon PoS and Polygon CDK.

Polygon zkEVM, a scaling rollup solution compatible with Ethereum, has faced difficulties in gaining traction compared to its L2 competitors such as zkSync and Manta Pacific. The network has recorded fewer transactions, indicating a struggle to establish itself. Despite this setback, the project remains committed to addressing the ongoing malfunctions and ensuring network consistency amidst the increasing competition within the L2 market.

This incident is part of a series of outages that have impacted the crypto market in 2024. Notably, Coinbase experienced continuous crashes as Bitcoin surged above $70,000, resulting in significant losses exceeding $100 billion. Likewise, Solana encountered block-production issues on February 6, highlighting the challenges faced in maintaining stable blockchain performance.

Despite the zkEVM outage, the native token, MATIC, maintained its bullish trajectory, gaining 2.30% in the last 24 hours and trading at $0.9831. Polygon supporters remain optimistic about the token’s long-term potential, citing increased adoption and the absence of token unlocks as catalysts for growth.
