Revolut closes cryptocurrency transactions to US citizens

British fintech company Revolut said it is suspending its cryptocurrency services in the U.S. as of Sept. 2, 2023.

All of the company’s U.S. cryptocurrency customers have already received an email from Revolut:

“We regret to inform you that we are closing our cryptocurrency platform in the US.”

As of September 2, US customers will no longer be able to place orders to buy cryptocurrencies on the Revolut platform.

“Revolut is actively seeking alternative ways to provide access to cryptocurrencies, and we look forward to offering them to U.S. customers again in the future,” the official statement reads.

The decision was influenced by the changing regulatory environment and uncertainty surrounding the cryptocurrency market in the U.S., the company explained.

“This decision was not made lightly and we understand the frustration it may cause,” the company said.

In late June, Revolut announced the delisting of three popular cryptocurrencies, ADA, MATIC and SOL, on the U.S. marketplace. While the company did not provide a specific reason for the delisting, a direct link can be traced to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) legal standoff against Coinbase and Binance. Recall that the SEC refers to the ADA, MATIC and SOL as securities in both cases.
