Russian Cybercriminal Sentenced to Probation and Compensation for Ryuk Ransomware Involvement

A Russian national, Denis Dubnikov, has been sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to compensate the victims of his alleged involvement in the distribution of Ryuk ransomware and money laundering.

The Federal Court of Oregon has ordered Dubnikov to pay each Ryuk victim $2,000 in compensation. Dubnikov was arrested in Amsterdam in late 2021 and extradited to the US in August 2022.

He pleaded guilty in February 2023 to his alleged involvement in cybercrime and money laundering conspiracy.

The court verdict includes a previously served prison term and several conditions of supervision, including regular reporting to the police, taking drug tests, and voluntarily providing DNA samples at the request of the authorities.

Meanwhile, the Dutch court has ordered the release of Alexey Pertsev, the Russian developer of the Tornado Cash cryptomixer protocol, from custody, allowing him to await the completion of court proceedings under house arrest.
