SEC Initiates Public Consultations on Proposed Bitcoin Trading Options Rule Change

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has opened up discussions on a proposed rule change for the trading of options on Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The SEC is seeking public feedback on the matter and aims to assess the potential impacts of introducing Bitcoin options trading on the broader market, especially during periods of market turbulence. Multiple exchanges, including Cboe Exchange, Nasdaq ISE, and NYSE American, have requested permission to enable options trading on recently approved spot Bitcoin ETFs. Interested parties are invited to submit their comments by May 15, with a deadline for rebuttal comments by May 29. The SEC is also considering whether options trading on spot Bitcoin ETFs should be subject to the same regulations as stocks.
