South Korea Universities Face Banking Hurdles in Converting Crypto Donations to Cash

South Korean universities are facing obstacles when it comes to converting cryptocurrency donations into cash due to banking restrictions imposed by financial authorities. These authorities are concerned about the potential for money laundering through corporate accounts, as they lack individual verification compared to accounts with real names attached. As a result, universities are unable to open corporate accounts for coin transactions, hindering their ability to convert cryptocurrency donations received from certain crypto businesses. The Korean Financial Intelligence Unit (KoFIU) and the Ministry of Education are expected to stick to this prohibition, citing the risk of money laundering and the need for fairness to other businesses. However, there might be a possibility of establishing a system to convert existing coins into cash for universities that have already received such donations. This decision comes after South Korea implemented a policy that prevents charities from accepting cryptocurrency donations, despite the growing popularity of digital currencies in the country.
