South Korean Government Employee Accused of Stealing $400,000 for Crypto Investments

A civil servant in South Korea has been charged with allegedly stealing more than $400,000 from government funds and using a portion of it to invest in cryptocurrencies. The Cheongju District Prosecutors’ Office announced the arrest and charges of an unnamed civil servant, who worked at Cheongju City Hall. The accused, who is in their forties, is said to have misappropriated approximately 600 million won (around $438,000) over a span of seven years. The civil servant, responsible for overseeing student work placements and projects for North Korean defectors, allegedly forged official documents to facilitate the embezzlement. Law enforcement has seized the accused’s assets, including apartments and vehicles, to recover the stolen funds. The South Korean authorities intend to build a strong case against the perpetrator to ensure appropriate sentencing. This incident adds to the list of recent crypto-related cases involving civil servants in South Korea, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with such illegal activities.
