The State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine exposed the activities of an underground data center, which was organized for mining cryptocurrencies in the premises of the branch “Rava-Russian forestry” of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”.. The center was arranged by employees of the organization itself. Among them were the former director, who now heads another branch, his deputy, who became director, the chief accountant and other employees.
More than a year ago, equipment was installed in a government facility that enabled the operation of an illegal mining center. The generated cryptocurrency was stored in specially created cryptocurrency wallets of officials. The state enterprise paid the costs of electricity, while the criminals made a net profit.
According to preliminary estimates, the losses amounted to more than 1.5 million UAH, while the figures made at least 4 million UAH profit.
In addition, due to the constant load on utility networks, there were periodic power outages and serious disruptions in power supply to residential facilities and important infrastructure.
While investigations were underway, law enforcement officers confiscated equipment for mining.. Namely: flash drives, computers, laptops, cell phones, video cards, power supplies, motherboards, processors, hard drives, cooling systems for processors, adapters, servers and disks on which uninterrupted video surveillance records were stored. They also confiscated documents that confirmed the criminal activity of. The total value of the seized property is more than 3 million hryvnias.
Criminal proceedings on the fact of embezzlement of state property have already been initiated.. The defendants face up to 8 years in prison.
