On January 27, 2024, Somesing, a South Korean karaoke platform built on blockchain technology, fell victim to a highly sophisticated hacker attack, resulting in a loss estimated at around $11.58 million.
It has been clarified that the breach was not an inside job, and instead, professional hackers were responsible for carrying out the attack. These hackers were able to successfully steal a total of 730 million SSX tokens. Out of the stolen amount, 504 million tokens were not yet in circulation, while the remaining 226 million SSX tokens were held in the Somesing fund.
The project team has taken immediate action by contacting the National Police Agency for a thorough investigation into the incident. They have also pledged to report the matter to Interpol. Collaborating with the local blockchain organization, Klaytn Foundation, and Uppsala Security, Somesing is actively tracking down the perpetrators.
Somesing intends to freeze the compromised assets and pursue legal measures as soon as the attacker’s identity is established.
Upon Somesing’s request, South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit, Bithumb, and Coinone have temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals for SSX tokens. These exchanges have issued warnings to users about potential increased volatility. However, the HTX and Gate.io platforms, where SSX tokens are also listed, have not yet issued similar advisories to their users.
It’s worth noting that on January 23, 2024, the MailerLite database was breached, granting attackers unauthorized access to the accounts of numerous prominent companies within the Web3 ecosystem.
