U.S. senator urges tech companies to flag AI-generated content

  • Appeal comes from Michael Bennett
  • He asked companies to work on a data-marking mechanism by the end of July
  • Twitter responded with an offensive smiley face

Senator Michael Bennett sent an open letter yesterday, June 29, to several major companies urging them to label AI-generated content. He said this is crucial in combating misinformation and defamation.

“The continued creation and distribution of AI authorship content without clear and understandable markers poses unacceptable risks to public discourse and election integrity,” Bennett said in a statement.

The politician also emphasized that the effectiveness of these measures depends heavily on voluntary compliance with the outlined requirements. OpenAI, Microsoft, Twitter and several other companies received the senator’s letter.

Bennett asked for a vision and a clear mechanism for labeling such content by July 31.. Notably, none of the companies responded to the letter, except Twitter. Here, according to Reuters, they limited themselves to an insulting smiley face.

It should be noted that the EU is considering a similar measure.. However, the proposal has drawn some criticism due to the fear of censorship of technology. An interesting fact – a recent study by scientists from the University of Zurich showed that people are more likely to believe the misinformation that was created by artificial intelligence. So the senator’s statement is not without truth.
