Ukrainian people's deputy was suspected of incorrectly declaring cryptocurrencies worth 24 million hryvnia

  • The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) have officially accused a Ukrainian member of parliament of providing false information in their 2020 electronic declaration.
  • Experts estimate that the value of the cryptocurrency assets that were “knowingly falsely declared” by the suspect amounts to 24.6 million hryvnia.

In a statement released on January 31, 2024, NABU and SAP revealed that they have suspicions regarding the entry of false information in the electronic declaration for 2020 by a current Ukrainian member of parliament. However, the identity of the accused individual has not been disclosed.

According to the ongoing investigation, the accused official declared ownership of crypto assets in 2020, claiming that they were acquired in 2019. The reported market value of these cryptocurrencies is stated to be 24.6 million hryvnia.

Subsequent findings by NABU and SAP have revealed that the cryptocurrency wallet mentioned in the declaration did not actually belong to the accused member of parliament.

“Transactions involving the acquisition of the cryptocurrency specified in the declaration were actually conducted by individuals from another country who are unrelated to the individual under investigation,” the statement clarified.

NABU also expressed their gratitude to their partners for their assistance in training their detectives in advanced crypto-investigative techniques, which have proved invaluable in exposing such offenses.
