US Authorities Sentence 12 Individuals for $3.5 Million Cryptocurrency Robberies Involving Violent Home Invasions
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has handed down sentences to 12 individuals for their involvement in a string of violent home invasions aimed at stealing over $3.5 million in cryptocurrency. The ring leader of the group was given a 47-year prison sentence, while his accomplice received a 20-year sentence. According to the DOJ, the victims were terrorized at gunpoint in their own homes, and one man was even abducted, held hostage, and beaten before being found by law enforcement 120 miles away from his residence.
The DOJ announced on Friday that the 12 defendants had been sentenced for their roles in a series of violent home invasions specifically designed to steal cryptocurrency. The attacks spanned across multiple states and resulted in the theft of digital assets worth over $3.5 million. Remy Ra St Felix, a 25-year-old from West Palm Beach, Florida, received a 47-year prison sentence for orchestrating the robberies. The court records revealed that St Felix and his partners used a technique called SIM swapping to take control of their victims’ phone numbers, ultimately granting them access to their cryptocurrency accounts. After gaining control, the group conducted home invasions, where victims were held at gunpoint and restrained with plastic ties. The criminals also forced one man to hand over access to his computer and cryptocurrency exchange account, resulting in the theft of over $150,000 worth of digital assets.
To launder the stolen funds, the conspirators utilized anonymity-enhanced cryptocurrencies, instant exchanges, and decentralized finance platforms that did not require know-your-customer checks. The victims, who were families residing in Florida and Texas, endured hours of captivity, physical abuse, and threats during the home invasions. One instance involved a man being held at gunpoint along with his family in their home before being kidnapped, beaten, and eventually located by law enforcement 120 miles away from his residence.
Key conspirator Seemungal also faced severe repercussions, receiving a 20-year prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $4,038,479.39 in restitution. Seemungal pleaded guilty for his role in the cryptocurrency theft, hacking victims’ accounts, and participating in the home invasion and robbery scheme. In addition to St Felix and Seemungal, nine other co-conspirators were sentenced for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, while other individuals involved in the crimes were also punished accordingly.
