Vitalik Buterin Takes a Dig at the Metaverse, Calls it a Branding Ploy

Vitalik Buterin challenges the widely accepted notion of the Metaverse, calling it a mere branding ploy rather than a well-defined concept. Speaking at the BUIDL Asia conference in Seoul, he argues that the Metaverse encompasses more than just virtual reality (VR). While it is commonly associated with immersive VR experiences and avatars, Buterin believes that this is a simplified representation of what the Metaverse truly entails.

He points out that the term is often used as a buzzword, lacking a clear definition and functioning more as a label. According to Buterin, the Metaverse should be understood as a virtual universe where individuals can participate freely, without being owned by any particular entity. He expresses the need to integrate various elements such as crypto, VR, and AI to build a comprehensive Metaverse.

Additionally, Buterin discusses the importance of striking a balance between security and convenience, citing Ethereum’s current lack of a robust solution in this regard. As he encourages further development and exploration, Buterin highlights the need for a more precise understanding and implementation of the Metaverse concept.
