Hackers Steal $15 Million in Cryptocurrencies through Mimicked Exchange Website

Hackers managed to steal more than $15 million in various cryptocurrencies using a website that mimicked the HitBTC crypto exchange page.

The company’s analysts identified and published four addresses used by attackers and explained the three ways hackers gain access to users’ wallets on the fake site.

The first method is by prompting users to validate their wallet connection on a fake page. When the user clicks the confirm button, hackers gain access to USDT tokens.

The second method is to go to the page for depositing funds, which looks identical to the real page of the exchange.

However, in the field for the address the data of the hackers are entered. In this case, they rely on the account owner not double-checking the wallet address.

In the third case, the scammers used an automatically appearing sidebar to sign for a transaction on a site with data already filled out that wouldn’t normally be verified.

When the user clicked to confirm, the attackers gained access to the assets.

Earlier it became known that a cryptoblogger decided to check the KYC (“Know Your Customer”) procedure on the Gate.io exchange and registered under the name of Kim Jong-un.

It took him just a few minutes to get his identity verified.

According to CertiK, a cybersecurity and auditing company, more than $103 million was stolen from cryptocurrency projects during April as a result of hacking attacks
