Pennsylvania to Open America’s First Atomic-Powered Bitcoin Mining Center

Cumulus Data, a subsidiary of independent electricity producer Talen Energy, has completed construction of the first US-based Cumulus Susquehanna data center with a promise of zero carbon emissions.

The new data center will have a capacity of more than 40 MW, achieved through a direct connection to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in northeastern Pennsylvania. It is expected that in addition to server equipment for cloud computing, equipment for bitcoin mining will be located on the territory of the data center.

The Cumulus Susquehanna data center is the first in a future network of 18 Cumulus Data interconnected data centers with a planned combined capacity of more than 470 MW. On their basis, the first US mining complex Nautilus Cryptomine, operating exclusively on nuclear energy and mining “carbon-free cryptoassets”, will be deployed.

In 2021, the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, announced that the first bitcoins were mined at a state-owned mining farm powered by geothermal sources.
