Togliatti management company was accused of mining cryptocurrency at the expense of residents

Residents of a Tolyatti apartment building in the Samara region were surprised to find a hidden mining farm in their basement. They accused their own management company of engaging in secret mining activities and promptly reported the situation to the police.

Concerned residents noticed that despite the increased costs for heating and electricity, the temperatures in their apartments remained uncomfortably low at around 16–18 degrees Celsius, even in the midst of winter. Their suspicions were confirmed when they learned about a neighboring building housing a mining farm through social media.

“We decided to investigate further and discovered that there was a locked room in the basement that nobody knew anything about. This lock wasn’t here in 2022. We peered through the crack, inserted our phones, and captured a video revealing what appeared to be a mining rig. That’s why our heating isn’t functioning properly,” one resident explained.

Frustrated by the situation, the residents lodged complaints with the police and the prosecutor’s office. However, when security forces arrived at the scene, they were unable to enter the locked premises. The residents suspect that the management company is deliberately trying to go bankrupt and have even submitted relevant documents to that effect.

In a recent incident in the Penza region, three miners were held accountable for installing cryptocurrency mining equipment and illegally connecting it to the power grids. As a result, the TNS Energy Penza company experienced damages amounting to over 2.7 million rubles.

To curb excessive consumption by large mining centers in Siberia, the Ministry of Energy is considering multiplying electricity tariffs. Following the ban on mining in China and the enforcement of strict regulations in Kazakhstan, many mining centers have relocated to the neighboring regions of the Russian Federation.
