In Argentina, contracts can be settled in Bitcoin

Diana Mondino, Argentina’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, announced that a new decree will legalize the use of certain currencies, including Bitcoin, in contracts and for payments. This decree is part of the government’s economic reform and deregulation efforts.

Even though the decree does not explicitly mention cryptocurrency, it includes provisions that allow companies to pay in currencies that are not recognized as legal tender in Argentina.

“We confirm that in Argentina contracts can be settled in Bitcoin,” Mondino stated.

Additionally, the decree grants people the freedom to choose the type of currency they use, which can include foreign currencies and potentially cryptocurrencies.

President Javier Miley appointed Mondino as foreign minister, signaling a potential positive stance towards cryptocurrency adoption in Argentina.

The decree comes as Argentina continues to deal with high inflation rates. President Miley’s first national address outlined measures to address the country’s economic issues, and this new decree is seen as a step in that direction.

In the past, President Miley referred to Bitcoin as a way to return money to the private sector, but he has not made any public statements about digital assets since taking office.
