Belarus CBDC ‘Will Let Nation Decentralize Cross-border Trade,’ 2026 Rollout Confirmed

Belarus plans to roll out its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) in 2026, with the aim of decentralizing cross-border trade. The National Bank of Belarus (NBB) believes that the CBDC will help eliminate risks, including those related to sanctions, and open up new opportunities for cross-border cooperation. The NBB has already created a demo version of the digital Belarusian ruble (DBR) and is building a platform for the coin. Businesses will be able to start using the CBDC in 2025, with a nationwide rollout scheduled for 2026. The CBDC will be based on the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain protocol and will allow for anonymous purchases. The NBB intends to make the CBDC totally decentralized, allowing citizens to exchange digital rubles for cash or non-cash rubles at any time.
