China to implement blockchain-based identity verification system

China is taking steps to implement a blockchain-based identity verification system called RealDID. Despite a ban on digital currencies, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security is partnering with China Mobile Communications Group, Beijing Zhongdun Anxin Technology, and the Blockchain Service Network for this project. RealDID aims to provide citizens with greater control over their identities, allowing them to choose the information they disclose to third parties. The platform will offer privacy-focused features and is expected to serve as a national data infrastructure. While the public launch details are not disclosed, the plan includes onboarding businesses to the platform in the future. The Chinese government has been actively embracing blockchain technology for various initiatives, including its central bank digital currency (CBDC) and metaverse plans. They are also working on establishing a national blockchain framework and promoting blockchain education and talent development.
