Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Is No Longer a Member of the Giving Pledge: Report

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who joined the billionaire charity initiative, the Giving Pledge, in 2018, has reportedly been removed from the group. This development is quite rare among signatories of the Giving Pledge. Armstrong had previously expressed his desire to use his wealth for social betterment, including improving education and economic freedom. However, his removal follows the closure of his nonprofit organization, GiveCrypto, in December 2023. GiveCrypto aimed to distribute digital currencies to those in need but faced challenges in creating lasting change through cash transfers. Armstrong is not the only crypto leader to face removal from the Giving Pledge. Sam Bankman-Fried and T. Denny Sanford were also removed due to legal issues. Despite these setbacks, Armstrong remains influential in the cryptocurrency industry. As the co-founder of Coinbase, he has successfully expanded the company’s operations globally and established partnerships with Wall Street asset managers. Armstrong has also been active in lobbying for cryptocurrency legislation and has contributed significant funds to support this cause. However, while Coinbase’s custody business has generated substantial revenue, concerns remain about its long-term profitability due to regulatory costs and competition from Bitcoin ETFs.
