Earlier, the ban on the use of the digital dollar was supported by the state House and Senate. New law against state digital currency will take effect July 1, 2023.
Governor Ron DeSantis explained his position by saying that with a digital dollar, the Fed would be able to control the spending of citizens. DeSantis is convinced that CBDC is a threat to financial stability:
“We’re just thinking about the future of Florida.. Authorities can block your money if they think you fill up your gas tank too often.
They’ll call it fighting global warming. It may happen that you buy a firearm and they don’t want you to buy another. If that genie is let out of the bottle, it will be very hard to get it back in.
Florida governor urged other states to follow suit.
In March, Texas Senator Ted Cruz also introduced a bill against the use of CBDC out of concern that the state’s cryptocurrency could hinder bitcoin adoption.
However, not all U.S. politicians share this view. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, known for her opposition to cryptocurrencies, supports the launch of the digital dollar.
Last year, she urged the government to speed up its development.
