Malaysian Police Hunt 4 Suspects in Kidnapping Case Involving $1.2M Crypto Ransom

Authorities in Malaysia are currently on the hunt for four suspects in connection with a high-profile kidnapping case involving a Chinese national and a Malaysian woman. The incident took place near the Lebuharaya Maju Toll Plaza in Cyberjaya on July 11. Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that three men and one woman are still at large, while 14 other individuals involved in the crime have either been apprehended or killed.

The group, consisting of a total of 18 individuals, played different roles in the abduction, including planning, executing, and collecting the ransom. The motive behind the kidnapping was financial, with the perpetrators demanding a ransom of $1.2 million (RM5.3 million) to be paid in cryptocurrency. Subsequently, the police managed to recover RM1.65 million in cash, luxury vehicles, watches, and other valuable items.

In a separate incident on August 2, police in Johor, Malaysia, took action by shooting four suspects and arresting four others believed to be involved in the case. Fortunately, the victims were released on July 15 after their family paid the ransom.

This case highlights the growing use of cryptocurrencies in criminal activities and the challenges authorities face in tracking and apprehending suspects involved in such cases. The Malaysian police’s efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects demonstrate their determination to bring these criminals to justice and ensure the safety of the community.
