Man Disappears with Woman’s Cryptocurrency, Initiating Police Inquiry in Hong Kong
A peculiar case has unfolded in Hong Kong, where a man vanished with a woman’s cryptocurrency, prompting a police investigation. The incident took place at a crypto exchange shop in Mong Kok, where a 26-year-old woman fell victim to a scam and lost approximately $12,000 worth of tether (USDT). The woman had been contacted by an individual online who claimed to be able to exchange her digital assets for cash. They arranged to meet at a designated store, where she transferred 12,000 USDT to a specified wallet.
However, after waiting for over two hours without the promised cash arrival, the woman reached out to the authorities. The police have categorized the case as “obtaining property by deception” and have taken charge of the investigation. They are currently on the lookout for a man described as approximately 30 years old, heavyset, and around 1.8 meters tall.
The victim revealed that she had been monitoring the crypto shop’s social media account to check its legitimacy before deciding to proceed with the transaction. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a scam, and she later discovered that the social media account had no connection to the store involved.
This incident serves as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution and conduct thorough research when engaging in cryptocurrency transactions to avoid falling victim to scams.
