Media: Amazon will make a film about Bitfinex hackers

  • Amazon MGM Studios has partnered to create a film based on the notorious Bitfinex hacking incident.
  • The movie will revolve around the lives of crypto scammers Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan.
  • Details about the film’s title have not been disclosed yet.

In an unexpected move, Amazon MGM Studios announced their plans to produce a gripping film centered around the infamous Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange hack. The narrative will primarily focus on Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, who stand accused of orchestrating the laundering of a staggering 119,756 BTC stolen from the platform. This exclusive scoop was reported by Deadline.

Although the film’s title remains a mystery, it has been confirmed that renowned director Anna Marks will helm the project.

“While there are few details available at this stage, the movie will delve into the lives of Morgan and Lichtenstein, who confessed to their involvement in the 2016 Bitfinex hack following their arrest in 2022,” the statement read.

It is worth noting that prior to her arrest, Morgan pursued her ambitions in the music industry under the pseudonym Razzlekahn, along with writing for Forbes and working in the cybersecurity field.

In February 2022, both individuals allegedly behind the Bitfinex hack were apprehended in the United States. Following their arrest, Netflix commissioned a documentary series shedding light on the crimes committed by Lichtenstein and Morgan.

For a quick refresher, it was on January 14, 2024, when Paolo Ardoino, Bitfinex’s technical director, publicly announced the exchange had fallen victim to a hacker attack. The assailant attempted to exploit the “partial payments” vulnerability as a means to gain access to the platform’s funds.
