Mercari marketplace will begin accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment

  • Mercari, the Japanese e-commerce giant, is set to start accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment from June 2024, according to reports from Nikkei.
  • Payments will be processed by a subsidiary of Melcoin, which will handle the payment processing for the cryptocurrency.
  • Mercari has recently launched various digital asset-related products, indicating its growing interest in the crypto industry.

Mercari, founded in 2013, operates in the USA and Japan and plans to expand its operations to Europe soon. The marketplace has gained popularity with 22 million daily users as of June 2023.

Mercari is actively developing services related to the digital asset industry, such as the cryptocurrency trading platform, Mercari Bitcoin. The platform allows users to buy and sell Bitcoin using proceeds from their sales on the marketplace. Within seven months of its launch, the platform already garnered 1 million users.

The company has also integrated its loyalty system with the trading platform, enabling users to exchange accumulated bonus points for bitcoins.

It is worth mentioning that Japan is considering abolishing the corporate tax on unrealized profits from cryptocurrencies, a move that further highlights the country’s positive stance towards digital assets.
