Metroelectrotrans Workers Given Suspended Sentences for Stealing Electricity to Mine Cryptocurrency

Trial was held in Kazan over Metroelectrotrans workers who installed an underground mining farm and stole the company’s electricity. They were given suspended sentences.

Interestingly, the underground miners held high positions – we are talking about the general director and chief engineer of the municipal event.

It purchased 25 cryptocurrency mining devices and installed it on the traction substation.

“The court found that between March and May 2021, wishing to illegally enrich himself, the 34-year-old director of the power department of ground transport MUP Metroelectrotrans conspired with the 42-year-old chief engineer,”

the prosecutor’s office of the Republic of Tatarstan reported.

In total, the damage to MUP Metroelectrotrans amounted to 567,000 rubles. The defendants partially pleaded guilty and reimbursed all the losses.

Therefore, the court found them guilty under part 1 of Article 285 of the Criminal Code (abuse of power), but did not impose a real term of imprisonment;

In general, under this article the term of imprisonment can reach 4 years.

Instead, the director and chief engineer of the MUE received a 2-year suspended term of imprisonment, a 1.5-year probation, and a 2-year disqualification from holding public office.

In early April, power engineers discovered a large-scale mining farm with 200 devices in the city of Cheremkhovo.

As it turned out, the owner of the farm organized what is commonly referred to as a mining hotel.
