First fraudulent crypto accounts spotted in new social network Threads

Creators of several cryptocurrency accounts on Twitter reported the appearance of their clones on the new microblogging platform Thread. Crypto-enthusiasts on Twitter warned: clone creators look like scammers.

Meta’s Threads is in turn a Twitter clone that launched on July 5. The number of users of the new platform is approaching 100 million on account of Instagram users, although Twitter’s results (450 million users) are still far away. Nevertheless, fraudsters have taken notice of the new platform.

The appearance of the Threads account of the same name was announced by the developers of the decentralized finance platform Wombex Finance. They stressed that the Wombex team had nothing to do with the account on the new platform and suggested that money extortionists were most likely operating there.

One of the popular NFT-bloggers Leonidas reported a similar case: his account and the pages of other “big NFT-holders” appeared on Threads. The blogger said that he had to create his own, real account on the new platform in order to fight the scammers.

So far, the developers and bloggers claim, the Threads accounts have not posted phishing links or committed any criminal acts.

It was previously reported that eight popular cryptocurrency Twitter accounts were hacked in the spring, and the hackers were able to get nearly $1 million.
