ScamSniffer: Hacker group posed as journalists to steal crypto-assets

According to security platform ScamSniffer, Pink Drainer hackers accessed 1,900 accounts and stole $3 million in crypto assets from Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Mainnet, Polygon and Optimism.

ScamSniffer experts report that a group of Pink Drainer hackers posed as journalists for popular media outlets such as Cointelegraph or Decrypt to conduct fake interviews and then compromise victims’ accounts using social engineering tools.

After gaining the trust and putting victims’ vigilance to sleep, the attackers informed them that, according to crypto’s security policy, they must confirm their identity and undergo mandatory KYC verification. To this end, the hackers redirected their potential victims to phishing websites.

Once the hackers had assumed administrative control of the victim’s account, they were able to seamlessly steal digital assets, sensitive information, and place fake ads.

According to ScamSniffer analysts, Pink Drainer was behind the recent hacks of the accounts of OpenAI CTO Mira Murati and American DJ Steve Aoki. In the first two weeks of June alone, at least 8 popular cryptocurrency accounts on Twitter were hacked, and the hackers received almost $1 million.<br
