CoinGecko: Crypto projects distributed tokens worth $26 billion using airdrops

Analysts from the company CoinGecko have determined that within a span of less than three years, the largest cryptocurrency projects have given away tokens for free, which are now collectively valued at $26.6 billion.

Experts conducted an analysis of the top 50 airdrops that took place from January 1, 2020, to December 16, 2023. The most significant cryptocurrency distribution occurred during the airdrop by Uniswap on September 16, 2020, where developers distributed $UNI tokens worth $6.43 billion to interested participants.

The second-largest airdrop was conducted by Apecoin on March 17, 2022, where APE tokens worth $3.54 billion were distributed. In third place was the token distribution by dYdX in September 2021, with $2 billion worth of DYDX tokens.

“The combined value of the Uniswap, Apecoin, and dYdX airdrops amounts to $11.99 billion, which accounts for approximately 45.1% of the top 50 airdrops,” stated the CoinGecko experts.

Analysts have calculated that 18 out of the 50 largest airdrops took place in 2021. The number of such events decreased in 2022 and 2023, with 14 and 13 distributions respectively.

“This decline can be attributed to the bearish trend in the cryptocurrency market, which may hinder projects from conducting distributions,” concluded the experts.

Recently, the airdrop of Arbitrum tokens concluded with $59 million being returned to the project treasury. The Arbitrum administration notified the community that the remaining 69,448,385 unclaimed ARB tokens in the user contract for receiving tokens were transferred to the #ArbitrumDAO treasury balance. As a result, the shares of Arbitrum experienced a 1.6% decline.

In the summer, hackers compromised a Twitter account belonging to the management of The Sandbox, a metaverse project, and falsely promised the distribution of native SAND tokens.
