Teenagers from Canada stole more than $4 million in cryptocurrency

Two 17-year-olds from Canada stole $4 million in bitcoin and ether from a U.S. citizen, posing as support staff for the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

The investigation involved the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service’s Electronic Crimes Task Force (ECTF). Police suspect the teens may have stolen another $13.4 million in cryptocurrency this way.

The perpetrators used the aliases Felon (“Criminal”) and Gaze (“The View”). They spent part of the stolen money to buy @zombie’s Instagram account. The teenagers have now been arrested. They are charged with theft of money and possession of property or proceeds of property obtained by criminal means.

According to analyst firm PeckShield in its monthly report, attackers managed to steal nearly $93 million in cryptocurrency worldwide during June. The hackers made a total of 42 hacks.

Recently, an employee at Bill’s Cost Supermarket was arrested in the U.S. for stealing cash to buy bitcoins, and in Texas, a group of intruders tried to steal a crypto machine.
