Understanding the Impact of Synthetic Biology on Healthcare and Beyond

White House Collaborates with 8 More Companies in its AI Responsibility Initiative

The White House has expanded its alliance with eight additional AI developers based in the United States, all committed to responsible development of generative AI tools. The newly enlisted companies include NVIDIA, Scale AI, and Cohere.

This extension of the initiative stems from a Biden administration effort launched four months ago. Industry leaders convened with the administration to formulate universal guidelines governing the responsible progression of generative AI. The catalyst for this initiative was the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which brought AI into the mainstream spotlight in November.

The White House released a statement emphasizing the significance of these commitments, highlighting three fundamental principles vital to the future of AI: safety, security, and trust. These principles mark a crucial stride towards the development of responsible AI.

In May, Vice President Kamala Harris engaged in discussions with the heads of Alphabet, Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI. These conversations addressed the responsibility of corporations and policymakers in supporting ethical innovation and implementing safeguards to mitigate potential risks and harms.

The White House’s AI pledge garnered support from seven prominent tech companies, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, when they signed on in July. The recent meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients marked the “second round of voluntary commitments” in the initiative’s progression.

Scale AI emphasized the critical nature of these commitments and the parallel development of model capabilities and evaluation processes in a blog post. Cohere’s President & COO, Martin Kon, expressed the company’s pleasure in joining these commitments and acknowledged the White House’s serious consideration of challenges and opportunities within the enterprise AI sector.

During testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, NVIDIA’s Chief Scientist, William Dally, affirmed the company’s endorsement of the White House’s voluntary AI commitments. He stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to AI regulation, addressing national security concerns, and preventing AI misuse while preserving the United States’ leadership in this technological domain.

Dally’s remarks highlighted the potential to ensure safe, trustworthy, and ethical AI deployment while spurring innovation and making AI tools widely accessible to everyone.

Adobe, IBM, Palantir, Salesforce, and Stability AI joined NVIDIA, Scale AI, and Cohere in embracing the White House’s AI pledge.

The disruptive influence of AI, both for positive and negative purposes, continues to be a significant concern for policymakers globally. During a Senate Banking Committee hearing, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler pointed out that new technologies, particularly AI-generated deepfakes, could pose challenges to existing U.S. laws, particularly in the context of online scams and market manipulation.
