Crypto Market Faces $2.5 Billion Options Expiry Following Recent Market Downturn

Crypto Market Set for $2.5 Billion Options Expiration Amid Recent Downturn

In the wake of the recent crypto market crash, there is approximately $2.5 billion in options for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) expiring today. Investors are closely monitoring this expiration as it could have an impact on market conditions.

According to Deribit, there are $1.94 billion worth of Bitcoin options set to expire, with a maximum pain point of $60,000. These options consist of 31,615 contracts, slightly fewer than last week’s total. Despite the recent volatility, the put-to-call ratio of 0.71 indicates a generally bullish sentiment.

For Ethereum, $552.13 million in options are expiring, involving 206,626 contracts. This represents an increase from the previous week. The maximum pain point for these options is $2,950, and the put-to-call ratio is 0.95.

The maximum pain point in the crypto options market is the price level that causes the most financial discomfort for option holders. Meanwhile, the put-to-call ratio suggests a higher prevalence of purchase options over sales options.

Analysts from crypto options trading tool Greeks.live have provided insights on today’s contract expiration, highlighting the high implied volatility (IV) of all major terms, exceeding 60%. The current 7-day realized volatility (RV) for Bitcoin is at 100%, surpassing the IV level.

Despite Monday’s market crash, where Bitcoin and Ethereum prices dropped significantly, the crypto market quickly began to recover. Bitcoin has climbed back above $60,000 and is now trading at $61,494, marking a nearly 10% increase in just 24 hours. Similarly, Ethereum has surged almost 12% and is trading at $2,671.

History has shown that options contract expirations often lead to sharp but temporary price movements, with the market stabilizing shortly after. Traders are advised to remain vigilant, analyzing technical indicators and market sentiment to effectively manage potential volatility.
